Spread the numbers!

Science and numbers alone are not enough. For change to take place we need a shift in our collective mindset. If we want to embed these numbers in our laws and democracy, we need to create global awareness and understanding of this vital data.

What are the CUTx Numbers and why are they so important?

The CUTx Numbers provide a clear definition of how close we are to the planetary boundaries of 1.5°C and 2°C heating.

You cannot see the elevated numbers for 1.5°C and think that there is any realistic chance of humanity staying close to that level of climate change.

The numbers for 2°C demonstrate how urgently the Global North must cut its emissions. This responsibility is amplified by the fact that it is the Global South that will suffer the first and the hardest from the destabilization of the atmosphere.

Without the clarity of this scientific frame, it is very easy for schools and the media to get lost in half-truths and misinformation. These authoritative numbers frame the Climate Academy programme and all its projects.

Here are a few examples of Climate Academy projects that any school, university group, or individual can do.

Cross-curricular Climate Academy Projects

The Writing's on the Wall

The science is emphatic. We are going to crash into some serious walls of physics and chemistry. Everyone has the 'Right to Know' what is going on above our heads. Make a statement, paint a wall in your school that represents your 'Right to Know', and your right to a safe and stable atmosphere.

Above the faces of the people, put the number for your own country.

Movies for Change

Choose any chapter of the Climate Academy Student Book. Identify the key points and then do some peer teaching about it. You could teach about tipping points to a Geography class, about Climate Anxiety to an English class, or about the planetary boundaries to an Economics class.

Facing Conflict

After establishing the macro truths of the environmental tipping points that are in play with the climate crisis, a short case study of Syria will illustrate how the current environmental stress marks are already pushing some societies into a state of conflict. This project leans on the inspirational work of reportage artist George Butler and invites students to sit in dialogue with each other and draw – as a example of the skills and humility that we need in order to exit the crisis.

The Numbers

Discover your nation's carbon emissions percentage needed to globally stay below a 1.5°C and 2°C temperature rise target.

The Academy

The Climate Academy provides students with a systemic understanding of the crisis. It then empowers students into the democratic space through projects with real systemic leverage.
